The Welcoming Card

Few days ago in my regular lazy morning, my eyes spotted something white and square lying next to my bedroom’s door. It was a postcard with a catchy sentence in strong red font on its front side. It said: “Je vindt ‘t pas echt in Utrecht”. Correct me if I’m wrong, but according to my poor Dutch skill, the sentence more or less means “You’ll find it only in Utrecht”.

It was a welcoming postcard signed by the major of Utrecht himself saying that he warmly welcomed me as one of his new citizens. This has made me realized that I’ve been living in this city for more than two months right now. And the postcard was right, there are so many things that I only found and experienced here, even it’s just in two months. Say its weather, the bikes, the food, its festive days, its old buildings, its people, its trains and bus, its river and its falling leaves during the springtime. Maybe I’m exaggerating. But for a man who came from a tropical sub continent, living in a four seasonal country is extraordinary. I’ve never seen such some changes can happen only in weeks. Small example, I witnessed how an ugly bald tree could transformed into a green leafy plant and few weeks later its flowers blossomed where some of their petals could fall onto your hair.

Yes, I did miss home and still struggling with the culture shock, new habits and other hundreds surprises that you’ll find when you start to live in new place.  One thing that I realized, I think I should enjoy it. Cest la vie.
